WAUKEGAN, Ill – Today, Sierra Club Illinois Chapter announced its endorsement of local state Representative Rita Mayfield. Sierra Club is America’s largest and most influential grassroots environmental organization.
“Sierra Club is proud to endorse Representative Mayfield for re-election and continue our partnership in building a strong, healthy, 100% clean energy economy in Lake County,” said Kady McFadden, Deputy Director of Sierra Club Illinois Chapter. “Representative Mayfield’s leadership was essential in passing historic coal ash legislation last year to protect Waukegan’s lakefront. Her leadership will continue to be critical in addressing ethylene oxide pollution and passing comprehensive climate legislation that holds utilities accountable and puts environmental justice communities like Waukegan first.”
Representative Mayfield has been a strong advocate for environmental issues in the Waukegan area since joining the General Assembly in 2010. Last year, Rep. Mayfield worked in close partnership with local environmental groups to create new regulations to ensure Illinois businesses are not releasing toxic chemicals into the air and water, especially in densely populated areas like Lake County.
“The choices we make today to protect our environment are crucial to our children’s future health and well-being,” Mayfield said. “A vital aspect of being an effective legislator in Springfield is being able to work in partnership with groups like the Sierra club. I am honored to have the endorsement of the Sierra Club and look forward to continuing our fight for environmental justice.
Mayfield has also received endorsements from Northeast Illinois Federation of Labor, SEIU Illinois State Council, SEIU Local 73, Illinois AFL-CIO, Planned Parenthood, Personal Pac, and numerous local elected officials.
